Realtors and local officials can work together as partners to enhance the Los Gatos community, Joe Pirzynski, mayor of Los Gatos, told members of SILVAR's Los Gatos/Saratoga District this week. Pirzynski, who was the guest speaker at the District's July 11 tour meeting.

Pirzynski said he feels lucky to be mayor of Los Gatos. "Your clients are my clients. This is a great place to be," he told SILVAR members.

He then listed the community's many assets, such as its pristine environment, its beautiful landscape, the unique character of its downtown and homes. He said there is a synergy within the business community and residents, noting, "It's not by accident that our downtown is a place where people can enjoy themselves and get together to shop."

Los Gatos has a good school system, which not only excels academically and provides kids with a good education, but also "gives them a sense of life, makes them part of the community and teaches them that they can be someone unique," he said and credited an involved parent community as one of the major reasons the school system excels.

Then there's Los Gatos' strong sense of community. "People want to be involved in this community and want to have a say. Put that package together and you can see why property value are the way they are," said Pirzynski. A recent California Association of REALTORS® report ranked Los Gatos among the top 10 cities in the state with the highest median price in May of 2007 - $1,225,000.

The Los Gatos mayor urged SILVAR members to talk to their clients about these assets. "If they want to live in the community, they need to be immersed in the community. Tell your clients they need to jump in and be full participants."

Because of these assets, Pirzynski said local officials are striving to maintain a balance, to preserve as well as enhance the qualities of the community. He invited Realtors to join local officials as partners in this endeavor.

"We want to be unique and make sure we don't make mistakes," Pirzynski said. He explained it's the reason why officials have hillside guidelines, commercial design guidelines and the soon to be completed residential design guidelines.

He also talked about projects underway which can enhance Los Gatos, such as the need for a recreational area for youth, perhaps a hotel as a forum for conferences, a skate park, and a new library.

Through the years, Pirzynski said many surrounding cities have lost their downtown in their move towards development and now, they find themselves recreating a downtown.
"Few (cities) resisted the urge; I'm thankful we did …We have to be careful that we maintain the wisdom and make sure mistakes aren't made. We can work together as partners to help this community grow and enhance it to become even more than the town it is," said Pirzynski.
