The 2007-2008 board of directors and officers of the Chinese American Real Estate Association (CAREA) were formally installed at a banquet dinner on Thursday, Aug. 9, at the Dynasty Restaurant in Cupertino.

Mayor Chuck Reed of San Jose delivered the opening remarks, and Steve Hanleigh, California Association of REALTORS® Region 19 Chair for the Santa Clara County Association of REALTORS® (SCCAOR), installed the new board and officers.

The Silicon Valley Association of REALTORS® (SILVAR) was a banquet sponsor of the event and represented that evening by Mark Burns, president; John Tripp, past president; Josie Gambera, director and chair of the Cultural Diversity and Equal Opportunity Committee; Carolyn Miller, director and chair of the Cupertino/Sunnyvale District; Willi Kraus, director and past president; Director Dave Tonna, Los Gatos/Saratoga District; Niki Maroko and Fariba Lighvani, District Council members; and Paul Cardus, Interim Executive Officer and Government Affairs Director.

"The Silicon Valley Association of REALTORS® seeks to promote homeownership for everyone, regardless of race. We are happy to support the Chinese American Real Estate Association in its goals," said Burns.
CAREA was formed in 1988 in the San Francisco Bay Area to promote the social and economic well-being and professional image of Chinese-Americans actively engaged in the field of real estate. Karl Lee announced the association's theme this year is "Building Community, Together."
Lee told fellow Realtors and affiliates, "We're all components of different communities that make up the Bay Area community. … Realtors today are facing a challenging market. It's easy for consumers to be taken advantage of with the market we're going into. It's important for us as professionals to take a lead."
He said this year CAREA will assist the diverse Asian American community through the Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI), the largest community-based organization serving low-income Asian immigrants and refugees in Santa Clara County. The organization seeks to improve the health, mental health, and well-being of individuals and their families by providing an array of human services. Lee indicated 30 percent of Asian Americans in Santa Clara County are among the low-income population.
Information recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau and published by the San Jose Mercury News, revealed Santa Clara County gained more Asians than any other county in the nation. There were nearly 18,000 new Asian residents in Santa Clara County between July 2005 to July 2006, bringing to the county's Asian population to over 550,000. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Chinese Americans constitute the largest group among California's Asian population.
