Joe Brown, president and chief operating officer of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Los Gatos, believes in the strength of the Northern California housing market, and says despite today's downturn, this market will sustain itself.

It all goes back to the weather, the diverse population in the region, and a good higher education pool, he says. "All this leads to a tremendous demand to live here, all based on the sunshine," according to Brown, who recently spoke to REALTORS®and affiliates at a Silicon Valley Association of REALTORS® tour meeting in Los Gatos.

Brown, who is regarded by those who know him as the "eternal optimist," tells REALTORS® and those affiliated with the real estate industry that he continues to believe a person's success depends on attitude. Even with today's economic downturn, it's important to be optimistic, Brown stresses.
In every market, good as well as bad, there are opportunities. "Always try to find an opportunity in every challenge. See the opportunity, grasp it, take it and run," Brown says.
Brown acknowledges the higher end of the real estate market has suffered the last three months as inventory has increased and sales decreased. Even as lenders say there is money available, it has become difficult for buyers to obtain credit.

"Things will get a bit worse before they get better, but after this, I believe we'll have five to seven years of a good run," Brown predicts.

The inauguration of a new U.S. President has helped boost everyone's attitude. "The whole country as a whole fills a bit of optimistic," Brown says. "It's not easy, but we need to work hard and look ahead. If we just hunker down and work hard, we're going to get through this."

In the meantime, Brown shares this advice, applicable to anyone wishing to succeed in life, despite the troubled economic times:
1. Focus on time management. Set an appointment with yourself and use a check list; it will help you accomplish a lot in a day.
2. Exercise and eat well.
3. Stay away from negative people. They will only pull you down. And don't put others down. It's not a good trait to have and it only zaps your energy.
4. Improve on social networking. Brown says joining the social networking site Facebook is a tremendous way to network with people.
5. Use affirmation. This market is the way it is. You need to figure out how to work in this market. Most of all, don't quit!

Brown's presentation to Silicon Valley REALTORS® is part of the local trade association's Los Gatos/Saratoga District's invitation to brokers and managers to educate and motivate members.
