Members of SILVAR's Global Business Council and other SILVAR members celebrated the Lunar New Year on Wednesday with a potluck featuring an array of Chinese and other international dishes and learning about foreign exchange services and the transfer of money to and from abroad.

SILVAR Global Business Council Chair Jennifer Tasto and SILVAR President Carolyn Miller welcomed everyone to the event. Tasto announced upcoming global programs, including AREAA's (Asian Real Estate Association of America) Global Summit in Hawaii on April 21-23 and the Destination Vegas: Your Passport to Resort and Global Success on April 18-19 at the Greater Las Vegas Association of REALTORS® headquarters.

At SILVAR, coming up is the National Association of REALTORS® At Home with Diversity (AHWD) certification course, tentatively set for April 8, and the CIPS (Certified International Property Specialist) Institute on June 24-28. Miller, who attended the CIPS Institute at SILVAR last November, encouraged members to enroll in the CIPS Institute and obtain the designation. Miller said students gain a wealth of information from the CIPS courses, which is can prove valuable when dealing with foreign and immigrant buyers. Miller, along with 21 other students who attended SILVAR's CIPS Institute last year, has obtained her CIPS designation.

The potluck consisted of a wide array of dishes which members brought to share, from Chinese chicken salad, fried rice, lemon chicken, Philippine pancit, Chinese fried chicken, egg rolls, Indian pakoda, tofu with vegetables, Italian salad, Chinese stir fry vegetables, rigatoni pasta, lemon chicken, to a kashk-e-bademjanan Iranian eggplant dish, fried xiu mai, and desserts like bibingka (rice cake), yam pudding, sesame balls, coconut mochi, leche flan, and of course, fortune cookies.

The 27 attendees who attended the event then listened to a presentation by Michael Ward, Forex Foreign Exchange Services CEO for Europe and North America. Ward discussed how money is transferred from overseas to the United States and vice versa and foreign money exchange issues that can arise and affect transactions. Ward's presentation was followed by a lengthy question and answer period, much discussion and networking among members.
