- For Immediate Release –

Cupertino, CA - The Silicon Valley Association of REALTORS® Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Cardus to the position of Executive Officer. Cardus has served as SILVAR's Government Affairs Director and more recently, as Interim Executive Officer, since the resignation of Janet Case in May.

"SILVAR is pleased to have selected Paul Cardus as our Executive Officer. We are greatly privileged to have such a well-qualified and experienced individual to be able to take over the helm of our dynamic and growing Association," said SILVAR President Mark Burns.

Prior to his appointment as SILVAR's Government Affairs Director in 2005, Cardus served as press secretary and speechwriter for United States Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-Hawaii) for eight years. Cardus first joined the senator's staff as a legislative assistant after graduation from the University of Hawaii, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, a Russian Area Studies Certificate and a Master of Arts degree. He also served as national finance director for the senator's first Senate campaign in 1990.

Cardus has served as SILVAR's Government Affairs Director for the past two years. In December 2005, Cardus also assumed responsibility for Public Affairs at SILVAR and has worked with SILVAR's Public Affairs Coordinator to increase community awareness of Realtor activities and community services, and the experience and expertise Realtors bring to every transaction.

In his capacity as SILVAR's Government Affairs Director, Cardus has strengthened the Department and helped SILVAR make great strides in championing REALTOR® initiatives supporting and protecting their business, advocating for homeowners and homeownership, and defending private property rights at the local, state and national levels. Last year, with the support of SILVAR's Government Affairs staff, SILVAR was a leader in the effort to defeat Measure A, an anti-growth ballot initiative in Santa Clara County; successfully opposed BMR increases in Mountain View and Sunnyvale; and led the fight to protect the mortgage interest deduction. More recently, Cardus and his Government Affairs staff have worked to educate Realtors and elected officials about the private transfer tax loophole in California and block the repeal of Proposition 90 in Santa Clara County.

"I'm grateful for the confidence and support that the selection committee, personnel committee and Board of Directors have entrusted in me. SILVAR has had a long history of strong leadership and we have a great team in place. I'm excited by this opportunity and for the future of our Association," said Cardus.

Cardus will maintain the dual role of SILVAR Executive Officer and Government Affairs Director.
