SILVAR Board Director Toby Vanderbeek, who is a Realtor with Intero Real Estate Services, presents the Sameera Mokkarala, a graduating senior from Gunn High School. Mokkarala plans to attend Pomona College in the fall.

The Silicon Valley REALTORS® Charitable Foundation, the charitable arm of the Silicon Valley Association of REALTORS®, presented scholarship awards to 18 graduating seniors from public high schools in Silicon Valley. Each student received a $1,000 scholarship. 
 
The Realtor association's scholarship program, now in its ninth year, recognizes students who have exemplified outstanding achievements in academics, extracurricular/employment activities and community involvement. The selection committee included representatives from the local business community, area high schools, area colleges and the Silicon Valley Association of Realtors.
 
Students who received scholarships from the Foundation, the schools from which they graduated, and the colleges and universities they will be attending are: Nadia Basillo, Cupertino High School (UCLA); LaQuintin Devon Cathey, Fremont High School (UC Santa Barbara); Sameera Mokkarala, Gunn High School (Pomona College); Viktoriya Zhukhovitskaya, Homestead High School (UCLA); Navjoot Lail, Leigh High School (UC Davis); Federico Padron, Los Altos High School (UC Davis); Brett van Zuiden, Los Gatos High School (MIT); Cindy Ju, Lynbrook High School (University of Pennsylvania); Marlies Ruck, Menlo Park Atherton High School (Tufts University); Krishi Peddada, Monta Vista High School (St. Louis University); Alina Boltunova, Mountain View High School (UC Berkeley); Hannah Rachel McGovern, Palo Alto High School (UC Santa Barbara); Christopher Kaewkan, Prospect High School (UC Riverside); Jessica Magallanes, Santa Clara High School (UC San Diego); Jennifer Coe, Saratoga High School (University of Notre Dame); Evan Robert Johnson, Westmont High School (UCLA); Peily Lau, Wilcox High School (Stanford University); and Lisa Gellerman, Woodside School (UC Berkeley).
 
"In our industry, we feel fortunate to be able to give back to the community by providing scholarships to these very deserving students," said Cammie Brodie, 2008 chair of the Silicon Valley Realtors Charitable Foundation. "Members of our association believe through our scholarship program we can help our local youth grow, succeed and achieve their dreams."
 
"We are happy we are able to assist the deserving winners in beginning their college careers," said SILVAR Scholarship Chair Nina Yamaguchi. "The nominees for the SILVAR Scholarship Program are always among the cream of the crop. We wish them the best in their future studies."
 
Representatives of local Realtor group attended senior award ceremonies at the various high schools and personally presented the scholarships to the winning students. They also thanked the teachers and staff in each high school for their help and participation in making this program the success that it is. They included Chris Alston (Keller Williams), Doug Larson (Coldwell Banker), Toby Vanderbeek (Intero Real Estate Services), Amir Shahkarami (Coldwell Banker), Raylene Khan (Sereno Group); Joanne Fraser (Coldwell Banker), Dennis Byron (Byron & Associates), Seema Rathi (Coldwell Banker), Mary Tan (Coldwell Banker), Cristina Page (Cashin Company), Mark Burns (Coldwell Banker), Sue Bose (Referral Realty), Pelin Erdal (Coldwell Banker) and Erin Burke (Coldwell Banker).
 
The scholarship program is a partnership effort between the Silicon Valley REALTORS® Charitable Foundation and educators. Scholarship recipients are selected from the high schools in the communities served by the more than 4,000 members of the Silicon Valley Association of REALTORS®.
