- For Immediate Release –
Cupertino, CA - The Silicon Valley Realtors® Charitable Foundation presented YES Reading with a grant for $2,500 during the December 8 Palo Alto District Tour Meeting. Coldwell Banker Realtor Arvada Darnell presented the grant to Sarah Almy, executive director of YES Reading.
“YES Reading is an innovative literacy program dedicated to tutoring children of all cultures who are having difficulty learning to read,” Darnell said. “YES Reading recruits and trains community volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring for at-risk elementary and middle school students reading significantly below grade level.”
The Charitable Foundation’s grant will support Belle Haven’s Family Outreach and Communication program at Belle Haven Reading Center in east Menlo Park. Family outreach is a critical component of YES Reading. YES Reading’s Home Connection program brings students’ families to the reading center to watch and participate in a tutoring session between their child and a volunteer tutor. During this session, parents are offered strategies and materials for effectively working on reading skills with their student in the home. The family outreach program also includes a “Take Reading Home” program that makes more age-appropriate books available in children’s homes. The grant will be used toward funding the salary of the Belle Haven Site director.
“This is the third year that the Foundation has supported our program,” said Almy. “Because of the generosity of people like you, we have been able to do many things to help the children. Last year, we were able to serve about 80 students, tutoring them a year’s worth of reading skills. We really appreciate your support.”
This grant was made possible in part by a sponsorship from Heritage Bank of Commerce.
