Certified International Property Specialist (CIPS) courses hosted by SILVAR began on Zoom this week, with 18 students from the San Francisco Bay Area and other parts of California, Arizona, Florida, Chicago, Ill., and Texas. The CIPS courses provides training in international business issues, including currency conversion, cultural awareness, legal and tax requirements, transaction principles of international real estate, and specifics about the real estate markets in Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

The CIPS course on Local Markets taught by instructor Christel Silver on Tuesday is a core course requirement for the CIPS Designation. The introductory course offers students an overview of the international real estate business environment, including capital flow, currencies, government regulations, including cultures.

"The CIPS designation will provide you with the knowledge and tools to expand your business globally. Global real estate opportunities are everywhere," said Silver. "People move from other countries and foreign-born individuals residing here move to new markets. People in your area may look to invest in property overseas. The training you receive and tools you learn in these courses will bring value to your clients."

Anita Rodal, president of SBPI Services, Inc., was the course Sponsor of the Day. Rodal spoke on how the foreign currency exchange market operates. She noted the foreign currency exchange market is the largest financial market in the world, with over $5 trillion dollars traded daily, more than 24 hours a day, six days a week. Rodal explained factors that affect exchange rates, why timing of a foreign exchange matters, and strategies that can mitigate risk of rate fluctuations.

"Currency exchange matters because your potential clients move around the globe every day for both personal and business reasons. The exchange rate affects real estate investors, those seeking to find a safe haven for cash taken out of their home country, importers, manufacturers, multi-national corporations," said Rodal.

The second CIPS core course is on Transaction Tools, which is scheduled for Monday, April 18. Taking the two core courses and three elective courses will fulfill the classroom requirements for the CIPS designation. Anyone can register for the CIPS courses, but only REALTORS® can earn the designation. SILVAR members who are already CIPS designees can audit a course for $30.
