The Silicon Valley REALTORS® Charitable Foundation Trust presented a $2,500 grant to the JustREAD program at the November Los Altos/Mountain View tour meeting. The grant was presented to Alison Kibrick, president of JustREAD's Board of Directors, by Silicon Valley REALTORS® Charitable Foundation Trustee Susan Sweeley. Sweeley is also a board member of JustREAD, which is based in Mountain View.
The Silicon Valley REALTORS® Charitable Foundation is the charitable arm of the Silicon Valley Association of REALTORS®, which makes grants available to organizations from donations by its REALTOR® and affiliate members and friends. The REALTORS® have been longtime supporters of JustREAD, which is a cross-generational program which started in 2004. The program is composed of retired professionals in the Los Altos and Mountain View communities who are trained as tutors to teach reading and writing basics to students who did not learn these skills in earlier grades.
Kibrick thanked SILVAR REALTORS® and affiliates for their generous donation and annual support for the local program. She said many students served by the program come from low-income families and families whose native language is not English. Studies show as these students learn to read and write better, their academic and social skills and self-esteem are enhanced, and they do better in school and in the community. The program is in need of more tutors, and Kibrick invited SILVAR members to volunteer and become JustREAD tutors.
Sweeley also thanked SILVAR's members for their support of the charitable foundation. She said members' annual contributions go a long way in helping nonprofit groups like JustREAD help individuals and families in the communities where the REALTORS® live and work.
The Silicon Valley Association of REALTORS® (SILVAR) is a professional trade organization representing over 4,000 REALTORS® and Affiliate members engaged in the real estate business on the Peninsula and in the South Bay. The term "REALTOR®" is a registered collective membership mark which identifies a real estate professional who is a member of the National Association of REALTORS® and who subscribes to its strict Code of Ethics.
