Everyone felt strong emotion and there was not a dry eye in the house as Allison Rix spoke and thanked Realtors and affiliates of the Silicon Valley Association of REALTORS® Los Gatos/Saratoga District on Wednesday, when they presented her daughter Erica with a check for $1,396.

The six-year-old Los Gators girl suffered an accident involving a jump rope that sliced off her hand as she and her mother were headed home in their vehicle after soccer practice last September. Erica was playing with the jump rope in the back seat of the car and let one end of the rope out the window to flutter in the wind. The jump rope, which was looped around her wrist, got snagged on the axle of the car.

Members of the district were touched when they learned about Erica Rix's accident and wanted to help the Rix family with medical expenses, tutoring and future surgeries. Their donation came from proceeds from the district's annual pumpkin auction and was presented through a grant from the Silicon Valley Realtors Charitable Foundation.

Allison Rix had a difficult time composing herself as she thanked members of the local trade association for their donation. She said her daughter has been out of school since December 17 because she has had to be at Stanford University Medical Center almost daily.

"Your donation has helped in lifting up our spirits," Rix said. "It has been a difficult time since our lives turned in another direction that day. We have had some major setbacks with infections, and still have a lot more to overcome."

Rix pointed to her smiling-faced daughter and noted, despite everything, "It's all worthwhile."

The Los Gatos/Saratoga District's Pumpkin Auction has been a longtime tradition. Realtors and affiliates bid actively on unique and beautifully decorated pumpkins and fall arrangements at the event and then donate the proceeds to charity.

"We're glad we were able to have the opportunity to help Erica and give back to the community where they live and work. This donation is just one way we try to help those in need," said Tim Alston, last year's Los Gatos/Saratoga District chair, who presented Rix and her daughter with the check.
